Botulism is a form of food-poisoning caused by toxins produced by the putrefactive bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

There are several different forms of Botulism caused by different forms of botulinum toxin produced by different strains of the bacterium. Two different forms of Botulism affect wild birds in Canada.

Type C Botulism: (English)

Affects ducks and other aquatic birds on wetlands, particularly in the prairie provinces

Type E Botulism: (English)(Français)

Affects fish-eating aquatic birds, particularly on the Great Lakes.
