The WNS is an emerging disease of bats in North America. Since 2007, it causes mass mortalities of bats in the North-Eastern United States. The spread of the disease seems epidemic, and new hibernaculum are affected each winter.
On April the 13th 2010, The ministry of Ressources naturelles et Faune (MRNF = Natural ressources and Wildlife of Quebec) released a note informing that bats affected by the WNS were found in Quebec through the active surveillance program of WNS.
